Little Kingdom Folk is a small team of parents and early years educators.
Founded by Penny and Lee Seward, our story began long before we chose a name or put our first collection together.
It began in the nursery and forest school we’ve been running for more than a decade.
There, caring for hundreds of children and getting to know their families, we’ve watched play, laughter and magic unfold.
We’ve seen familiar objects become something unexpected, favourite games return week after week and the enormous satisfaction of doing something quite small for the very first time.
Working with children gives you a particular understanding of toys. You notice the pieces that are carried across the room to join another game, the ones children seek out each morning and the ones that offer something different as they grow.
You see how a set of blocks can occupy a child who wants to build alone, then bring a group together around an ambitious construction. Spending day after day around play means you learn to look beyond the first impression and consider what a toy might become after the excitement of opening it has passed.
That experience is where our collection starts.
CAREFULLY CHOSEN
BEAUTIFULLY MADE
MADE TO BE KEPT
We also know what choosing toys feels like from the other side. As parents, we’ve searched for birthday presents, wondered whether something would be worth the money and tried to make thoughtful choices while faced with seemingly endless options.
It can be difficult to tell how something will feel in your hands, whether it will withstand everyday play or hold your child's interest beyond the first afternoon. Our ambition for Little Kingdom Folk was to be somewhere you could come with those questions and find a collection that had already been considered carefully. We’ve done the searching, so you don’t have to.
Over the past few years, we’ve worked to bring together the toys we would choose for our own children and our own setting. We looked for makers who take care over their materials, construction and design, and whose work gives children plenty of room to explore. Our experience helps us recognise that potential, but we remain curious too. We’re always interested in a different way to build, an intriguing texture or a simple idea that invites children to experiment. Everything here is chosen, not stocked: each piece earns its place through what it can offer a child.
Building this little kingdom takes time, and we’re happy to give it that care. Our hope is that something you find here becomes part of your child’s story: played with often, passed between siblings and perhaps kept when it’s finally outgrown. A reminder of the games they invented and the little person they were.
Childhood is short. The best of it is what we keep.
